FROM THE AUTHOR
The Enterprise saga captured world-wide attention, and not since Charles Lindbergh’s first solo flight over the Atlantic had onlookers on either side of the Atlantic been so taken with a peacetime hero.

The Enterprise story was front page headlines worldwide for more than two weeks and resurfaced on every anniversary for years. The Danish American skipper shared front page headlines with Winston Churchill, President Harry S. Truman, the Korean War and a British ruler’s death. Some days Kurt Carlsen’s story knocked them all off the front page. It was a story that everyone from youngster to grandparent had a passion to follow. It was a good story. The sense of responsibility, the sense of duty, honor and integrity this captain of the Flying Enterprise had was inspiring. It’s what the world needed. These readers in every country pulled for the Flying Enterprise and her captain; they prayed for that ship and her master. They prayed for his wife, my sister and me. Ten thousand of those people sent us adoring letters of love, thanks and congratulations.

What a joy it is for me to finally have the memorabilia of the amazing man my father was in one location where it is visible and easy to access for this generation and many generations. The memorabilia I unearthed is now displayed in a small Carlsen Museum in our home in Florida. The larger overflow is tucked away in the magnificent chests my father commissioned in the far east in his travels around the world as shipmaster.

We need more men like that captain. I very much wish that all of you know what he did, why he did it and what an important part of our history that event was to our family, our country, the world, and the United States Merchant Marine.

An Inspiring and Heart Warming Family History

Sonia achieved her objectives for writing her first book.. providing her grandchildren with the knowledge and appreciation for their great grandfather and grand mother as well providing the general reader with an inspiring story of a real hero.
Her book starts with the events that occurred over the 13 days that captured the attention of people across the globe and propelled her father into the role of a Reluctant Hero. As the book progresses she adds layer after layer of her written brushstrokes strokes which provide the reader with a true and in-depth portrait of her father as a father, husband and ship’s captain… a man of incredible character, dedication, integrity, vision, intelligence, caring, humility and innovation.
With additional written brushstrokes , Sonia broadens and enhances the narrative by providing details on all family members - including herself , her sister and in more depth her mother.
I thank Sonia for sharing the heart warming history of a hero and his wonderful family.

A Tale of Valor, Humility, Leadership and Family

Reluctant Hero" is an evocative biography penned by the daughter of a man who captured the world's attention for 13 days with his extraordinary battle against the ocean. This narrative delves into the heart of an unexpected hero whose leadership and resilience shone brightly, not out of a desire for fame, but from an innate sense of duty and humility.
Sonia’s intimate portrayal of her father provides a deeply personal glimpse into the man behind the legend, as he faced the relentless waves and also how he navigated through the fame that came from that. His quiet strength and steadfast spirit became a beacon of hope and inspiration to millions. Yet, it is his modesty and aversion to the limelight that truly define his heroism.
"Reluctant Hero" is not just a tale of survival; it is a poignant reminder that true leadership often comes from those who least seek it. The book beautifully encapsulates the essence of a man whose legacy is built on courage, integrity, and the unwavering love of his family.
A great read for anyone seeking leadership lessons, be it for business or personal growth. The book transcends the boundaries of a conventional biography, offering invaluable insights into the essence of true leadership and the impact of one's families love and support.
