The principal theme of Spiritual Pathways is the significance of the metaphysical soul. It is based on a spiritual diary kept by the writer. The book reveals how these ideas have developed; thus it is an existential work, reflective of the writer's individuality and situation. Whereas Richard Schain's book Souls Exist, 2nd ed. (2013) dealt with a similar theme within standard philosophical format, the current work more forcefully delivers the substance of his thought and extends it.

The writing explores the reasons why awareness of the soul hardly exists in contemporary society. Initially, Schain wrestles with the formula of faith in God through grace, which is fundamental to Christianity. Gradually, the realization emerges in him that the experience of religious revelation really reflects emergence of consciousness of one's own soul rather than of an all-powerful, big brother deity. Metaphysical (spiritual) consciousness in its broadest sense is set forth as the principal goal of human self-development. Other goals are considered secondary.

Schain believes that he writes in service of his own interior development. Readers may utilize the ideas proposed as they see fit for their own purposes. A metaphysical consciousness and freedom of thought are essential for appreciation of this writing.

Richard Schain obtained B.A. (philosophy) and M.D. degrees from New York University. He trained in neurology at Yale University, later serving as professor of neurology and psychiatry at UCLA. His life as an independent philosopher began with the publication of Affirmations of Reality (1982). Subsequent writings include The Legend of Nietzsche's Syphilis (2001),Reverence for the Soul (2001), Interior Lights (2012), and Souls Exist (1989; 2013). His essays have appeared in the electronic journal Philosophy Pathways(U.K.). Some of these were published in book form under the title Radical Metaphysics (2002) and In Love with Eternity (2006). The memoir Behold the Philosopher appeared in 2007. The writer developed an original form of philosophical expression "Sentences in Spaces" in which philosophic sentences are exhibited on artboards. These have been published in a book form under the title Sculpting Sententiae, An Art Form of Independent Philosophy (2010). All of these writings deal with the metaphysics and significance of the interior self. The works of Soren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Nikolai Berdyaev have been major influences upon the development of Schain's thought. Currently, the philosopher divides his time between Alamos, Mexico, and Sonoita, Arizona. He lives with his wife, Melanie Drieisbach.
